How can we become stars in the life-saving constellation of the Big Dipper?Lifesaver is an ode to the collective efforts of the Underground Railroad conductors who used the Drinking Gourd, a coded song and map to guide tens of thousands of enslaved African Americans in the south to freedom. The chorus “Follow drinkin' gourd“ was code for follow the Big Dipper, an astrological constellation and celestial compass used to orient enslaved people towards the North Star, direct them above the Mason-Dixon Line and into free states. This interactive installation invites you to use your body as a conductor to energetically connect the light poles and collectively illuminate new paths to freedom.
